Over 20 craftsmen and vendors plus games, food, entertainment, car and puppet shows will adorn the Middlesex’s Centennial Festival to be held on Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Hanes Avenue.
The event is a first for the town, said organizer Cherrye Davis. Hanes Avenue, at the fire station, will be closed off for the celebration. Mayor Lu Harvey Louis said all is set and ready and he invites everyone out to the celebration. [Read more, leave a comment.]
Pastor “D” Donald Coates leads the Young Disiples, a multi-denominational gospel choir, through their first live recording at Selma Baptist Church. The group’s CD will be available for sale soon to raise funds for their upcoming tour.

It was a packed house at Selma Baptist Church Sunday night, April 27, as several hundred came out for the Young Disciples first live recording “Alive in Christ.” And come out they did as they loudly cheered and clapped and chanted “YDs!”
Pastor Donald Coates of Pine Level Free Will Baptist Church organized the group in 1997 and since then it has grown to over 100 kids of all denominations who sing out the exuberating gospel sounds of the troupe. The annual Pine Level Fire Department’s Fireman’s Appreciation Day went just fine this year despite the firemen and crowds having to work around $25,000 worth of damage to the station caused by an accident last week.
“Everything went well,” said Chief George Crocker. “We just roped everything off and everybody had a few questions about it, and that was it. It was just a minor inconvenience.” [Read more, leave a comment.]

Kenly native Anna Woodall Hudson, 28, graduated from East Carolina University’s Brody School of Medicine this past weekend, thrilling parents Sara and Hal Woodall and husband Keith Hudson, senior pastor of Riverview Baptist Church in Washington, grandmothers, Gladys Slaughter of Wilson and Bessie Woodall of Princeton – and for good reason.
Hudson attended on a full academic scholarship (ECU’s Brody Scholarship) and graduated in the top 15 percent of her class in a way few, if any, have ever done, turning a remarkable accomplishment into an all-out conquest of the impossible. [Read more, leave a comment.]

Two Port-A-Johns were set on fire at the Kenly Parks and Recreational Facility (KAPARC) on Princeton-Kenly Road last Friday night. Both porta potties were completely engulfed by the flames, resulting in $2,000 worth of damage to the units. They are rented by the town of Kenly for public use.
The Pine Level Lions Club will be selling brooms at the Town Market Grocery Store on Saturday, May 17 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 12 noon.
These are high quality brooms, manufactured by the Industries for the Blind in Greensboro. Flat brooms as well as heavy duty commercial brooms will be available. [Leave a comment.]
Pine Level Town Board unanimously voted to withhold the town’s quarter- ly contribution of $12,000 to the PL Volunteer Fire Department after members brought alleged concerns before the Board Monday night of witnessing alcohol consumption on Fire Department premises this past Friday.

A dozen emergency response vehicles from three separate departments - Kenly, Micro and Princeton - responded to a fire at 2213 Princeton-Kenly Road at approximately 3:40 p.m. Tuesday.
Nobody was in the home when the fire broke out in the bedroom at the north end of the one-story, two-bedroom trailer, though the firefighters kept it confined to that room.
